A lifelong resident of Kings Mountain, Ronnie has been a member of the funeral industry for 41 years and those years have all been at Harris Funeral Home. A graduate of Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service in Atlanta, Georgia, he chose to serve the people of Kings Mountain and Cleveland County. He was licensed in Funeral Service (Director and Embalmer) in North Carolina and South Carolina.
He was married to his wife Libby Dye Hawkins, also a lifelong resident of Kings Mountain and they were married for 39 years and dedicated their lives to serve their community. Both are Elders at their church, First Presbyterian in Kings Mountain and Ronnie also served as the church treasurer and Sunday School teacher.
Service to the community has always been a special part of his life. To list a few of those services:
Served four terms (15 years) as a county commissioner for Cleveland County, having served as its Vice-Chair and Chair.
Served on the Kings Mountain District Board of Education for 12 years and as its chair for 6 years.
Served as an advisor of the Life Enrichment Center, YMCA, Council on Aging, Cleveland County Health Department, Community in Schools, Gardner-Webb University, Godbold School of Business, District Director for Boy Scouts of America.
Trustee, Cleveland Community College and Foundation Board member and trustee of Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Involved in many other activities, Civil Air Patrol, Pilots for Christ , Kiwanis Club, and board member of the Shelby-Cleveland Regional Airport Board and an advocate for the humane treatment of animals.
Served in the US Army, Mason and recipient of a number of awards, recipient of the Silver Beaver Award for the Boy Scout of America and the 2015 Bridge Builder Award from the Cleveland County Chamber of Commerce and on April 3, received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from Governor Pat McCroy.
In his spare time he loved to fly, taking over 950 children for their first flight, and reading.
Member of the North Carolina Realtor’s Association and associated on a part time basis with Coldwell Bankers Mountain View Real Estate.
