DATELINE:  KINGS MOUNTAIN, NORTH CAROLINA James Barnwell Surber

James Barnwell Surber, 89, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on December 17, 2024 at Atrium Health Cleveland in Shelby, NC. Born September 14, 1935 in Gaston County, NC, he was the son of the late William and Myra Harbin Surber and was also  preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, JoAnn Surber, siblings Bill Surber, Helen Goode, Gene Surber, Claire Greenway, Carl Surber, Earlene Jenkins, Eldora Barnette, Jeanette Heinbach, and Margaret Surber, and his step-daughter Sandy Sayers. James served his country honorably with the U.S. Navy from 1955-1959 and was a proud veteran. He owned and operated the Bay and Mustang gas stations in Kings Mountain for many years, and also ran successful concession and clothing businesses. A talented woodworker, he crafted many beautiful furniture pieces for family and friends over the years that will be cherished for decades to come. James enjoyed his family, especially his yearly family fishing trip to the Isle of Palms, where he treasured time spent with his son, nephews, and granddaughters.

SURVIVORS: Children: Darrell Surber (Denise) and Sheila Posey (Danny) Stepchildren: Mike Sayers (Elaine) and Debbie Baumgardner (Rusty) Sister: Marilyn Pheagin Grandchildren: Jennifer Thombs (Daniel), Magan Bell (Tim), Hannah Surber, Kalen Baliles (Amanda), Blake Sayers, and Mason Wallace (Casey) Step-grandchildren: Stetson Weir and Maggie Barnes Great-grandchildren: Bailee Bell, Taylor Etherton, Brianna Williams, Cole Thombs, Isaac Wallace, and Tinley Sayers James is also survived by many much-loved nieces and nephews.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Friday, December 20, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. in the Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel

VISITATION: Friday, December 20, 2024 prior to the service from 1:00 to 1:50 P.M. in the parlor of Harris Funeral Home.

INTERMENT: The family will hold a private interment ceremony at Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain, NC.
