Betty Sue Hoyle Thornburg

Betty Sue Hoyle Thornburg, 80, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2025 at home. Born February 19, 1945 in Cleveland County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Luther Raymond Hoyle and Hattie Lee Abernathy Hoyle. Sue was also preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Dwan Wray Thornburg, her son Darrell Dwan Thornburg, her brothers Don, Gene, Bill, Dale, and Coleman Hoyle, and her sisters Joann Lovelace, Ann Hord, Linda Willis, Margie Vess, and Kathy Weaver. Sue loved her animals, especially her cows and goats, and enjoyed being outdoors. She exercised her green thumb by growing beautiful flower gardens and tending them with care. She was particularly fond of her lilies. Sue also loved to sing, especially Southern gospel. She was a dedicated member of Faith Baptist Church in Shelby. Above all, Sue was very family-oriented; she loved keeping up with her sisters through long conversations on the telephone, and was a loving mother and grandmother who was fiercely protective of her grandchildren. Sue will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her.

SURVIVORS: Children: Gilda Thornburg and Zoltan Thornburg (Mae), all of Kings Mountain

Sister: Janet Helms (Mike) of Cherryville, NC

Grandchildren: Aaron, Rose, Myka, and Joy Thornburg, Erika Fleming (Shelby), Brooke Jones (Nathan), Tristan Thornburg, and Brandon Thornburg (Ashley)

Great-grandchildren: Zoey Griffin, Jace Quiles, Andrew Fleming, Easton Jones, and Liam and Isaac Samples

Sue is also survived by her bonus daughter, Glenda Smith, and a plethora of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members.

Sue's family wishes to express special thanks to the Life Enrichment Center of Kings Mountain, special niece Beth Hord, and VIA Health Partners Hospice for their care and support.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Friday, October 24, 2025 at 3:00 P.M. at Faith Baptist Church of Shelby, North Carolina with Pastors J. Barry Goodman, Johnny Owens, David Murray, and Zoltan Thornburg officiating

VISITATION: Friday, October 24, 2025 prior to the service at Faith Baptist Church of Shelby, North Carolina from 2:00 - 2:50 P.M.

INTERMENT: Faith Baptist Church Cemetery, Shelby, North Carolina
