Clara Belle (Humphries) Hughes

DATELINE:  KINGS MOUNTAIN, NORTH CAROLINA

Clara Humphries Hughes,  95, went to her heavenly reward on June 20, 2018 at Testa Family Hospice House in Kings Mountain.

Born in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Ferris C. Humphries, Sr. and Bertha Ledford Humphries.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of almost fifty years, Sidney Jackson(Jack) Hughes, three infant sons,  Howard Curtis, Sidney Conrad, and Sidney Waldo Hughes;   Sisters  Ella Jane  and  Edna Humphries,  Ruth H. Stephens;   Brothers  Edward Dwight Humphries, Sr., Herbert  B. Humphries, Sr.  and F.C. Humphries, Jr.

Growing up in the Bethlehem Community, she attended Grover High School and Kings Mountain High School, where she graduated.  Joining other family members in Richmond, Virginia, she worked for Dupont prior to marrying her high school sweetheart.  At that time she moved to Norfolk where Jack was stationed with the Navy and she worked at the Hampton Road Port of Embarcation. Other employment included retail accounting and school food service.   Her most cherished career roles were those of a loving Wife, Mother, Aunt, Grandma, and “GG”, her “self-created” name after becoming Great Grandmother.

She and her family returned to Kings Mountain in 1966 where they would operate Hughes Turkey Farm.

They joined Antioch Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School teacher, Girls Auxiliary leader, WMU member, Church Clerk, and choir member.  She recently transferred her membership back to Bethlehem Baptist Church, where her Christian journey began as a child.  She loved the Lord and served Him faithfully throughout her life.  Her Christian influence and her desire for her family and friends to know Christ as their personal Savior remained strong until the end.

She loved her family and found great joy in spending time with each of them.  She will be missed greatly by her family and friends.

She is survived by a son, Mark Hughes and wife, Patty; daughter, Beth McDaniel and husband, Randy, all of Kings Mountain; sister, Raye Holmes of Newberry, South Carolina;

Sister in Laws,  Betty M.Hughes, Kings Mountain,  Shirley H. Oliver and husband, Henry of Shelby

Grandsons, David Alan McDaniel and wife, Miranda; John Sidney McDaniel and wife, Ginger ;  Granddaughter,  Anna Grace Hughes; Great-Grandchildren, Lincoln Sidney, Alana Lynn, Masey Johnna, and Landry Claire McDaniel, all of Kings Mountain, and many dear nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, June 23, 2018, 2:00 PM at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Kings Mountain, led by Dr. Steve Taylor.  Burial will follow at Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain.

Visitation will be held Friday, June 22, 2018, 6:00 – 8:00 at Harris Funeral Home, Kings Mountain.
