HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Mr. Miles Hoffman Mauney, 85, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010.
Born July 18, 1924, in Kings Mountain, he was the son of Sarah and William Kemp Mauney. He was a graduate of Kings Mountain High School, where he and his twin brother, Ernest Jacob, were active in the band. He attended Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 1947 and continued to study piano in New York City. He later joined the U.S. Army Special Entertainment Services, where he met his wife, Dorothy Phillips Mauney, during the ware while he and Ernest entertained wounded soldiers at Northern General Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
After graduating from Oberlin, he and Ernest went to New York to concertize as the Mauney Twins. They played throughout the United States and Canada under the auspices of Columbia Artists. After Ernest's untimely death in 1959, Miles returned to school and received his master of music degree from Columbia University in New York City. Subsequently, he began a career as a college professor and taught piano at the University of Illinois, University of Minnesota and Oberlin Conservatory.
He and Dorothy moved in 1984 to Hilton Head, where they formed the Mauney Duo, a piano and violin team that actively performed throughout the East Coast. A highlight was performing for the opening of The Self Art Center of Hilton Head. Miles was also very active with the Hilton Head Youth Orchestra, playing the cello as his wife conducted. He also enjoyed solo performances with Celebrity Keyboard at numerous functions around Hilton Head. He served as pianist for First Baptist Church in Hilton Head for 10 years before retiring.
Miles is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Dorothy Phillips Mauney; daughters, Phyllis Mauney of Bluffton, S.C., and Cynthia Kane and husband, David, of Silver Spring, Md.; a son, Dan Mauney and wife, Carol, of Houston; granddaughter, Corin Wilson of Alexandria, Va., and Celeste and Ariel Kane of Silver Spring; also numerous nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.
Funeral: Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at 11 a.m. at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Kings Mountain
Visitation: The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.
