DATELINE: GROVER, NORTH CAROLINA

Oscar Johnson "John" Harry

Oscar Johnson "John" Harry, 80, of Grover, NC, passed away on July 20, 2026 at Testa Family Hospice House in Kings Mountain, NC. John was born August 8, 1945 in Cleveland County, NC, son of the late Charles Franklin Harry Jr. and Estelle Johnson Harry and was preceded in death by his siblings, Jean Harry Francis, Charles F. Harry III, and James A. Harry. John was a lifelong member of Shiloh Presbyterian Church. His passion for textiles developed at an early age, growing up beside the mill, he was lulled to sleep every night by the looms and motors that ran the process. On the weekends, John and his friends would use the mill as a playground, spending countless hours playing hide and seek and learning about the industry. John was a 1968 graduate of Clemson University, where because of his time spent working in textiles, his knowledge outpaced that of his instructors. After his graduation, John returned to Grover to continue his career in textiles. Grover Industries was formed by the Harry family and it flourished with John's devotion and leadership, employing many people and providing a good living to those in the area. John was an avid and accomplished golfer, having scored two holes in one during his time on the greens as a member of the Cleveland County Senior Golfers. He was a proud supporter of the Boy Scouts, having earned the rank of Eagle Scout. John loved boating and being on the water. He and his family spent many weeks at his home in Hilton Head. Time spent on the water with his family was one of his favorite memories. John was an accomplished boat captain and earned his Maritime Yachting Captain's license. He used his license to marry several couples throughout the years. John was an avid animal lover and spent many enjoyable hours with his dogs. He was a member and great supporter of Alcoholics Anonymous for the last 34 years, an accomplishment he was very proud of. Above all, John was a good man, a devoted husband, a loving father and stepfather, a proud and doting grandfather to two generations, and a faithful friend to so many. His devotion to his family, business, and community will be remembered by everyone who knew John.
