Ruby Hughes Baker

Ruby Hughes Baker, age 94, resident of Kings Mountain, NC passed away April 10, 2012 at Summit Place, Kings Mountain, NC. She was born in Cleveland Co. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Philip Baker, Jr., her son Luther Philip Baker, III and grandson, Jim Abernathy, Jr. Mrs. Baker was a prominent citizen of Kings Mountain. She was the eleventh of twelve children born to WG Hughes and Florence Wells Hughes in 1917. Mrs. Baker grew up in what is now known as the Dixon School Community. She attended Wingate College, taught school, worked as secretary for Phoenix Mills, and in 1979 retired after serving as Executive Vice President of the Kings Mountain Savings and Loan for numerous years. She was the first woman in the North Carolina Financial Industry to hold that position. Serving on many board of directors in the area, volunteering, and leading various groups over the years. Mrs. Baker was an active citizen of Kings Mountain and Cleveland County. She was involved in the creation of a book about the history of Cleveland Co., The Heritage Book, the Kings Mountain Historical Museum and a former member of the Kings Mountain Woman's Club. A charter member of Resurrection Lutheran Church, Kings Mtn. where she served in many capacities. She will be well remembered for her generosity to others, her kind heart, love for all creatures, and her welcoming smile and kindness.

SURVIVORS: Daughter: Ellen Abernathy, Grover, NC Granddaughter: Cathy Schmieg, 6 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Brother: Bob Hughes and wife Sue Numerous Nieces, nephews, and cousins.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Resurrection Lutheran Church, Saturday, April 14, 2012 11:00 A.M. Rev. Hobbie Outen, officiating.

VISITATION: 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. Friday evening, April 13, 2012 at Harris Funeral Home, Kings Mountain, North Carolina

INTERMENT: Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain, North Carolina
