Dr. Scott Mayse

Ray Scott Mayse 69, passed away peacefully at his home on February 10th, 2020.

Born November 11, 1950 in Rutherford County, he was the oldest child of Peggy Taylor Mayse and H. Ray Mayse.

He graduated from East Rutherford High School and Lenoir-Rhyne College before entering Bowman-Gray/Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 1976. Specializing in Internal Medicine, he attended the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for his internship and residency. In 1980, Dr. Mayse opened a private medical practice in Kings Mountain.

Scott loved spending time with his family, traveling the world with his wife Sarah, cheering on the Mountaineer football teams, watching his Panthers, and being frustrated by the Braves! He enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles, reading Harry Potter, and listening to the Beatles. Always willing to help a friend or a patient, he often remarked that he felt patient visits were like seeing old friends.

In addition to his busy medical practice and hospital duties, he was an active member of the community. Scott was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church where he was a church council president and served on many church committees. Scott was the 1985 Jaycee Young Man of the Year and president of the Kings Mountain KIWANIS Club at the time they launched the idea of building a community indoor pool at the high school. He played an integral role in the project’s development and fundraising efforts. After the natatorium was completed in 1989, he served as President of the Kings Mountain Indoor Pool Foundation for over a decade. He was very proud of this project but always gave credit to others.

Dr. Scott Mayse practiced medicine for over 43 years. He worked in Kings Mountain in private practice and then with First Charlotte Physicians in both their University and Epicentre offices. Returning to Kings Mountain last May, he planned to enjoy a slower life, reconnect with old friends, and reclaim his season tickets to Mountaineer Football games.

Scott was preceded in death by his mother Peggy Taylor Mayse. He survived by his father Ray Mayse of Bostic, his wife Sarah Huss Mayse of Kings Mountain, children: Marie Johnston (Eric) of Nixa, MO., Nathan Mayse (Sara) of Charlotte, Elise Shelton of Summerville, SC, siblings: Jennifer Kay Cymbalski (Bob) of Rutherfordton, Susan Hollifield (Mike) of Bostic, Sharon Arrowood of Gastonia, Jeff Mayse (Dale) of Rutherfordton, and grandchildren: Evan Johnston, Ryan Johnston, Will Johnston, Seth Mayse, Amelia Mayse, Brian Shelton and James Shelton.

The family wishes to thank the Cleveland County Hospice staff for its wonderful care and especially his nurse, Whitney Walls. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you send memorial donations to Huss Family Scholarship at Lenoir-Rhyne University or your local Hospice.

On February 22nd, there will be a visitation with the family at Harris Funeral Home in Kings Mountain at 10 am.  The memorial service will begin at 11am.
