Vernie Mae Norkett, 84, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on May 12, 2023 at Wendover Hospice House in Shelby, NC. She was born in Cherokee County, SC, daughter of the late June and Rose Blackwell Peterson and was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Steve Norkett, a son-in-law, Lee Gary Mayes and a brother, Floyd Peterson. Vernie worked as a seamstress most of her life and was a longtime devoted member of Patterson Grove Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher. She enjoyed spending time outdoors, gardening and spending time with her children and grandchildren whom she loved deeply. Vernie always looked forward to beach trips with her family. She and Steve were always proud of 6 homes they built while living in Kings Mountain. Vernie was a generous person, always placing others need ahead of her own. She lived a simple life, full of simple pleasures, crafting, cooking, and enjoyed tasty cookies to satisfy her sweet tooth. Vernie was a wonderful wife, loving mother, and adoring grandmother who has left treasured memories to fill the hearts of everyone who loved her.

SURVIVORS: Children: Ed Burns and wife Cari, Conover, NC, Shelby Splinter and husband Gene, Apple Valley, MN, and Elizabeth Burns Mayes, Charlotte, NC

Grandchildren: Matthew Cox and wife Holly, and Sarah Whitener and husband Brian

Great Grandchildren: Nolan Cox, Arthur Cox, and Broderick Whitener

Siblings: Harold Peterson and Lucille Kiser

FUNERAL SERVICE: Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Patterson Grove Baptist Church with Pastor David Webb officiating

VISITATION: Tuesday, May 16, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 1:50 PM prior to the service in the sanctuary of Patterson Grove Baptist Church

INTERMENT: Patterson Grove Baptist Church Cemetery
