Mabel Lindsay Hamilton McGill died peacefully in her home on Monday, February 1, 2016.
The eldest child of Buford and Frances Hamilton, Sr., Mabel was born in Montgomery, India on May 7, 1924, where her parents served as missionaries of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.
She enjoyed a wonderful education at Woodstock School in India, where she excelled in scholarship and sports such as track and field hockey.
When Mabel relocated to the United States to attend Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina, and it was there that she met the love of her life, John Charles McGill, who called Mabel “the Indian Princess”.
John and Mabel had an extended courtship, separated by Johnny’s years in medical school, internship and residency, and his World War II service in Japan.
Mabel and John married on October 6, 1950, and moved to Kings Mountain, North Carolina, where John established his medical practice.
Mabel found her calling as homemaker and mother to their five children, and this was her greatest joy.
Equally important to Mabel was her service to the Lord, and she was a tireless worker in the youth and women’s ministries of Boyce Memorial Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Mabel touched many young lives in her work as leader of Junior High youth group, chaperone to Bonclarken conference center, catechism teacher, and President of Women’s Missionary Society for the church and Presbytery. She was also active as a Brownie Scout troop leader and Cub Scout den mother.
When Dr. John retired from medical practice, Mabel and he enjoyed traveling to Scotland, Ireland, Western Europe, and Alaska. Following their 50th wedding anniversary, Dr. John fulfilled a promise to Mabel that he made at the time of their marriage by taking her to India to visit her childhood home and that land she loved.
Mabel and Dr. John truly loved their time together with family and friends until Dr. John’s death in November 2014. They especially relished the Pressly family gatherings, and felt very privileged to be a part of this large, loving family.
In her later years Mabel was physically disabled and endured many difficulties, to which she responded with characteristic determination, optimism, and grace that was remarkable to all who knew her. No matter what her situation, if asked “How are you doing?”, she always responded “I’m fine. How are you?"
Her mind was keen and alert to the very end.
Mabel adored her dear grandchildren, Carmen and Pressly McGill; Caroline, Sara Sullivan, Robert, and Catherine Cross, with whom she shared years of family beach trips, recitals, sporting events, birthday celebrations, weddings, and anniversary remembrances. She was delighted to meet and engage with her great-granddaughter, Ella Grace Lyles, with whom she shared a special connection.
Mabel is survived by her children, Frances Sullivan McGill, Meredith Jane McGill, John Knox McGill (Beth), Elizabeth Lowry McGill Cross (Rob), and Charles Hamilton McGill (Peggy). She was predeceased by her husband, John, sister Katherine Barnhouse, brother Dr. Lindsay Hamilton, and brother Dr. James Hamilton.
The McGill Family wishes to thank Dr. Scott Moss, Mabel’s physician, Flossie Johnson, Rhonda Wilson, and Lee Boswell, who provided years of loving and tender care for Mabel.
